by richard wotherspoon (Nr St Andrews) on 19 August 2017Garages can be intimidating places, inhabited by gruff, surly or dour mechanics who emerge from a dark recess having wrestled with a gallon of engine oil, to glower sceptically ay your feeble request. Not so at Cockburns Garage! The staff are consistently warm, friendly and accommodating with any requests you my have. All the work is explained carefully, in detail, including pricing before it takes place. In todays virtual world, it is gratifying to experience a more traditional, caring, face to face transaction, that is focused on providing a great customer service. (5/5)

Every time I brought my family's vehicles to him over the past three years, I got a truthful assessment of the situation and its costs as well as efficient and friendly service. It is evident that everyone who works at EJ Cockburn & Son takes great pride in their craft. This works itself out in a team of people working primarily for your trust and respect, rather than your money. On more than one occasion I simply brought my car in for some advice, and Phillip went out of his way to help and advise me on potential repairs or cost-effective preventative fixes. What's more, several times he didn't even charge me for this - the reason being, obviously, that he cared more about my return business and the mutual trust he works so hard to establish than a few extra quid. You will look in vain for a better garage. (5/5)

Each and every time Philip has gone out of his way to make sure he could look after our car as quickly as possible and for as inexpensively as he could. He is honest, reliable and ever so kind. I never have to worry if he is taking advantage of my lack of knowledge about cars. He always explains everything thoroughly and gives us our options before fixing things. His experience and knowledge about cars is evident. He has even come out to my house when my car wouldn't start to see if he could sort the problem there. I would highly recommend EJ Cockburn to anyone who is looking for a family run, honest, and experienced garage that will take good care of you and your car. (5/5)

They have looked after all our cars (+ our parents) for years and always manage to keep us going, even with really complex problems. They always keep us in the loop with possible costs or if car not worth repairing, and while they are not the cheapest around, they give great value and are 100% honest and trustworthy, wouldn't consider going elsewhere. Don't let the old buildings fool you, there's hidden gems inside. (5/5)
by Dan (Glenrothes) on 27 December 2014I have used this garage twice now and both times I have been struck not just by the speed of the work, but also by the friendly and knowledgable service. However, the main reason for the 5* rating is their professional honesty - I brought my car in with a misfiring ignition coil that would have cost the best part of £200 to replace. The part was already ordered in, but I was told that the car was still just under warranty and I should get it repaired for free by the manufacturer. I was very pleased to avoid a bill like that, especially since they could have screwed me over and I would have been none the wiser but much the poorer. It's nice to know that there are still companies who actually value their customers, rather than just their bottom line. I'll definitely be back! (5/5)

Philip Cockburn made room to see the car on the Friday morning, and sorted things out, testing and running the car to make sure everything was fine. He couldn't have been more helpful - even running me back into St Andrews when I left the car out. Service of that caliber really needs a review! Many thanks Philip, from a grateful holiday maker. by Philip Cockburn (St.Andrews) on 19 July 2014Having tried twice to contact St.Andrews Directory regarding CHM`s damming review of our services, we wished to point out to others reading these reviews that Mr Chernobrov (the only person not prepared to put their name to their review) has clearly forgotten about thanking us for all the efforts made (especially those after hours) which he was NOT charged for, how we contacted him immediately when problems arose, the photographs emailed and all the sound advice issued for his, yes his problem. He also seemed to forget about the fact that after failing to strike an agreement over how to proceed, we gave him a full refund of parts and labour, shook hands and parted on good terms, having both learned from the situation. His one star review is set in stone here forever, which saddens us that despite going to such an effort to try and assist someone who contacted Trading Standards, Citizens Advice and recorded our calls over a bill of just over £100. Everything however became clear when he presented his bank statement during our re-fund process (the first time ever in 55 years of trading). He may be unlikely to call on our services again, but we are even less likely to offer them. As for our star rating, please talk to one of your friends who uses us, then make up your own mind. (4/5)
by CHM (St Andrews) on 6 March 2014Brought my diesel car in with a slow start problem, they promised to diagnose. They call next day to say they've found a faulty glow plug and have ordered parts and started repair (without notifying me or talking about price) and also say that they have snapped a glow plug at the head and offer expensive repair at my expense (several hundred quid, top of engine comes off). Only cheaper option is to leave the car with the broken glowplug in, and 'forget about it' (quote). Deny any responsibility and charge me for all extra hours they had to do trying to fix a problem they caused and did not fix. Would never use again. (1/5)

Had cause to use their services again recently and the same high standards are maintained. They completed suspension repairs on a Mercedes using genuine Mercedes parts at virtually half the price of a main dealer. I would use this garage again in complete confidence and without the slightest hesitation. (5/5)

Their work is of excellent standard; very informative and helpful, and they always advise you of the different options available before going ahead. They are completely upfront with all costs and regularly check with you before they do anything other than what was exactly requested. Work is also top quality; they really know their cars and the idiosyncrasies that arise with the different makes and brands, as well as remembering the particulars of your personal vehicle. Other places may be a bit cheaper (Cockburn's isn't expensive), but you won't get nearly the quality or care. (5/5)
