It's been a while since I have last been in the Vic but today's experience was really disappointing. I went there for lunch today. Staff were really non-interested and unfriendly, the tables were all sticky and nobody seemed to care, I waited for ages and the pasta dish I eventually got was the worst I have had in years- all soggy and tasting of cheap sweet wine- and half-cold. Sorry guys- you won't see me again.

Nicky's right below - It's a great pub. I've not eated in there for a while, but in the evening it's a great laugh, with good drinks, staff and punters.

I went to the victoria cafe today for some luch with my partner and child. We waited 10 min before the waitress took our order then waited 40 min for the food, we ordered 1 cullen skink,1 baked potato with cottage cheese,1 bowl of curly fries and our kids meal. my partners baked potato came first, without cottage cheese but instead a greasy melted cheese a little salad with no cucumber or tomato or peppers as you would expect.my cullen skink had no smoked haddock in it but troutand there was no sign of any potato or leeks.i am under the impression that if you make a very traditional scottish soup you should do it properly. when i called over the waitress we got nothing but attitude and no appology of any type, infact they ignored us .i went up to the bar where i think it was the manager dressed as if he didnt care in jeans and a hoddie, make some effort.we didnt pay for the 2 meals .

Please ignore the rating as I have not been, I just wanted to point out something from Joe's comment - The Victoria Cafe used to be owned by Maclay Inns, who sold it and bought over the Gin House, converting it to The Rule. They also own Westport Bar, so if you liked the old Vic, try West Port or The Rule

The Victoria is the worst place i have ever been in. I attended the cafe on tuesday this week and was greeted by an exceptionally rude and obnoxious bar maid. After waiting for 10 minutes to see a breakfast menu. I had to wait a further 10 to order a drink. I was then told that under no circumstances (even my egg allergy) could i change the menu. I know it is cheap and i should not except much but still being spoken to the way i was is appalling. I would definitely not recommend any students or anyone infact to visit. Unless your into rude staff and waiting.

As of wednesday the 26th of November 2008 the Victoria cafe got a brand new menu which has something for everyone on it. We have looked at all the comments on this page and re-thought our menu and now are pleased to say everything is freshly homemade everyday and all served piping hot and portion sizes have increased so nobody leaves our building hungry! Please come in and sample this for yourself and if there is anything at all you can think of that we can improve on or wish to compliment us on please feel free to do so and we will do everything within our powers to make you feel welcome and comfortable during your visit. Thank you very much for all your comments we take all measures to prevent this from happening again and also for all your compliments we greatly appriciate all feed back.

I visited the Victoria Bar on Wednesday 15th Oct with my son and daughter who lives in St Andrews. We experienced the most awful service. 1st being told to collect a menu from a tear off strip on the wall then waiting 20 mins to take our order. The waitress got 2 of the main courses wrong. Did not apologise. I got burnt steak pie. When the bill came we were charged for the wrong items. When I went to complain to the manager I was told she was busy receiving a delivery!!! I waited on said manager who apologised and gave me a voucher to return the next day to enjoy a "more pleasant dining experience" We did indeed return the next day voucher in hand. However after physically stopping a waiter and pleading with him to take my order there was no sign of even a sniff of our drinks after being in the place for 30 mins. I donated my voucher to some students who looked like they had all day to mull around in a bar rather than being out enjoying the beautiful sights in and around St Andrews. On leaving I was told they were very understaffed today. Tell me something I didn't know!!! If this is the way tourists are treated in our country I expect a rapid decline in tourism very soon!!!

I recently visited St Andrews for the first time in about a year and stopped in at the new look Victoria and had an fantastic dining experience with amazing service good quality food quite clearly the best of the best in pub/resturaunt dining I had a pleasent chat with staff who were funny and upbeat especially two members who stick in my head because they were like a double act Samantha and George.

Mr Fox got the same service as me! This place will never survive with this poor quality of food and service. If you visit St Andrews as often as me -do what I - walk past the vic and head for the Rule or the westport. Both are good predictable bars with great food

Dear Sir I was appalled by the standard of the food, the cost and the length of time we customers had to wait in the Victoria on Friday. For the "special", a bowl of micro waved, liquidised frozen peas without any ham it cost £2.40, chips and a "burger" cost about £4.50 but worst of all was the "toasted sandwich". It was basically a small pre-baked baguette which had 3 slices of tomato in it and the blandest mozzarella, which had then been micro waved. Even though it hadn't been baked properly, 3 of the edges had been singed on a gas ring to make it appear "toasted". Almost as an afterthought, 4 small ripped pieces of the same water logged lettuce leaf, without a dressing, lay at the side of the plate. Along with a cola, this cost £7 ! It looked like the policy was not to serve food until the captive audience had bought a second round, and despite the fact most of it was prepared using a deep fat fryer, we had to wait 25 minutes. Our neighbouring tables were also frustrated with their experience. The poor bar maid even apologised at the end of this slow-motion, daylight robbery ordeal. What is this? With so many foreigners visiting our town, the impression these places are making is doing nothing to dispel the rumour that British food is awful. Needless to say, I won't be going back there again. Mr Fox
